Illegal Wiretapping passed

Posted by David Morton Fri, 29 Sep 2006 14:58:00 GMT

The House of Representatives just passed the Electronic Surveillance Modernization Act which allows for wiretapping without a court warrant.

This is in direct violation of the letter and spirit of the fourth amendment:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Though it will have to be modified to reconcile with the Senate version, I’m still scared of the abuse of pwer this will allow. Have we learned nothing from history? McCarthyism, Japanese detainment during WWII… When will our government learn to abide by the Constitution?

Kudos to my House Rep, Jerry Moran for voting against party lines and voting against this bill. Unfortunately, My Senate Representatives seem to be unable to vote against party lines, but rather follow Bush like a lapdog.

I’m looking for someone else to vote for in the senate.
