Lifting the floor
Within the last two weeks, we have been frustrated with several doorways in the house, all around the kitchen, that don’t seem to close right. We suspected the house had suddenly settled somewhere.
Poking around in the basement, I discovered one of the main support beams had a quarter inch gap between it and the floor boards that are supposed to rest on it. Ack!
I went to the hardware store today and purchased two steel jacks and hoisted the beam back up to the floor joists, and then gave them another half turn. I think I need to go up another half inch eventually, but I guess it needs to go slow, only a half turn per week. I hope by Thanksgiving the doors will be straight again!
