My backup server just saved the day again. I just got the new OSX upgrade today, and partway through the install, it said an unknown error had occurred. When I tried to reboot, the whole hard drive was corrupted.
But, thanks to the backup server, I now have a fresh OSX install on my laptop, and I’m restoring all the data from the backup server. :)

I am so happy right now that I paid for an extended repair program for my Macbook Pro, and also that I built that backup server.
My laptop started to shut off before it was supposed to when running on battery. I called them up, and after about 10 minutes on hold and 10 more minutes of troubleshooting, they agreed to send me a new battery. (Still waiting for it to ship a week later though)
The really big relief came this morning… I woke up to find my main workstation dead. The hard drive is making bad noises. The good news is that the Western Digital drive was under 5 year warranty, and it was a simple process online to get a RMA number and get it replaced. Most satisfying of all, the backup server finished its nightly backup at 1am last night, so I haven’t lost any files whatsoever. grin
That’s the type of service I expect. Which is exactly the opposite of my roofing experience. I’ll save that for a later story when I’m not so upset.

It seems like everything has gone crazy with my networks. Things that used to talk together are not talking together, and others are talking one way but not the other.
Due to uncertainty at Rob’s office, this server is now located on my own cable account, pending further evaluation of options. Pardon the slowness, I don’t have much upload capacity.
